IGF 2022: Workshop on global AI governance for sustainable development

Addis Ababa / Online, Start: 13:05 (CET)

The International Digital Dialogues will host a hybrid workshop on 1 December at the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2022 to discuss global AI governance for sustainable development. The IGF 2022 takes place from 28 November to 2 December in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a buzzword. On the one hand, it is portrayed as a set of technologies that will make millions of jobs redundant and exacerbate social inequalities. On the other hand, it is seen as a central tool for sustainable development along its economic, environmental and social dimensions. Realizing that potential while mitigating the related risks requires conducive framework conditions.

In this regard, governance frameworks are important to guide the development of applications, regulate the use of algorithms and implement safe und trustworthy AI systems. Challenges for policy makers include, among others, fostering access to meaningful data and incentivizing capacity development. These challenges should be tackled collectively, and adequate framework conditions should be implemented internationally.

Guided by a set of policy questions, the workshop at the IGF 2022 unpacks political, legal and philosophical dimensions at the interface of AI and sustainable development. The session aims to trigger discussions to advance a more concrete, global and multistakeholder agenda on AI and sustainable development. It will critically assess the benefits and threats of the emerging technology for society, environment and the economy. In addition, it seeks to display what tools are available for policy makers to address these challenges, sketching out policy pathways for adequate framework conditions.

We are looking forward to host high-ranking experts from Kenya, India, Mexico, Germany and Brazil as our valuable speakers.

The session is co-organised by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the German Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). The results of the discussion will be included into the framework of the International Digital Dialogues between Germany and partner countries such as Brazil, Mexico and India.
