General

On 27 November, the German Federal Ministry for Digitalisation and Government Modernisation (BMDS) hosted a satellite event at the AsiaBerlin summit for Asian companies. The event, for the first time ever, gave attendees the chance to ask questions directly to the European Commission on the recently launched EU Tech Business Offer. It also equipped the guests with practical information on the opportunities provided through the EU Tech Business Offer and the International Digital Dialogues.

In his opening remarks, Bernd Lakemeier from GIZ emphasised the importance of the Asian digital economy for the European market. He elaborated especially on Indonesia, with a delegation from Indonesia being present. Marc Lendermann from BMDS outlined how the EU Tech Business Offer complements the Digital Policy Strategy of BMDS to gain ground on digital sovereignty.

Introducing the EU Tech Business Offer

For the technical input, Olivier Bringer from the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) at the European Commission elaborated on the EU Tech Business Offer. He explained the new format, which presents a competitive advantage from a security and sustainability perspective to the Chinese and American counteroffers. It will provide public-private financing packages for European companies wanting to enter the Asian market. For Asian companies and governments, the draw lies in access to European R&D cooperation, access to the European digital market, and involvement in specific infrastructure development across Asia.

Exchanging perspectives with partner countries

During the panel discussion, Bernd Lakemeier, Marc Lendermann and Olivier Bringer were joined by Dr Sam Sethserey, Director General for Information and Communication Technology at Cambodia's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Firlie Ganinduto from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Miguel Exposito from the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) at the European Commission. The panelists provided the audience with insights on the unmet needs in Asian digital markets that EU companies can address through the Tech Business Offer. The representatives from the ministries also shared the current digital policy priorities of Indonesia and Cambodia.

Many guests took the opportunity to stay and network with fellow business representatives after the event.
