Stakeholder consultation in Tokyo: Greater involvement of industry

Japan

A desire for more exchange and cooperation, as well as specific digital policy concerns – these were the topics of discussion at a meeting of German industry representatives at the AHK Japan in Tokyo. The meeting took place on 16 December under the auspices of the Japanese-German Digital Dialogue and with the support of the German Embassy. The result of the half-day expert exchange is a more systematic, regular and in-depth involvement of German stakeholders in Japan.

The two partner ministries of the Japanese-German Digital Dialogue welcomed the participants: the German Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation (BMDS) joined online from New York, while the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) was present on site. Afterwards, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) provided strong impetus for the discussion from an association perspective, and ng-voice did the same from a corporate perspective.

The industry representatives contributed a wide range of topics and raised various concerns. They ranged from market barriers – such as complex regulations as a market obstacle for Japan and the EU and the high need for information and training in this area – to operational challenges such as cyber security, economic and supply chain security, secure energy supply for AI-supported servers, to specific digital policy requirements, such as standardisation gaps in data centre cooling systems, sovereign data management and dealing with the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

Further events

In order to strengthen bilateral digital economic relations, consultations with Japanese industry representatives (planned for the first half of 2026) and a larger stakeholder conference in Tokyo (planned for the second half of 2026) will follow.
