Shaping digital policy together

Digitalisation is transforming the global economy. It is creating new business models, optimising production and revolutionising communication. Balanced and transparent rules will establish legal certainty and fair competition on the internet. Only by aligning these rules internationally can the economy and society truly benefit from the opportunities afforded by digitalisation.

International Digital Dialogues

The German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) engages in Digital Dialogues with important partner countries. Its aim is to shape better conditions for the digital transformation of the economy and society.

As a multi-stakeholder initiative, the Digital Dialogues provide a platform for direct exchange between policy makers, regulators, businesses, academia and civil society. They address topics of the future, ranging from internet governance and data policy to the application of emerging technologies and support for innovative start-ups and SMEs in the digital economy.

The regular discussions at government level are prepared and accompanied by multi-stakeholder engagement. They provide an opportunity to share best practices and learn from each other. Current issues can be discussed directly with policy makers. The involvement of the stakeholders ensures that political approaches and solutions meet current needs.

Commissioned by BMDV, GIZ supports the International Digital Dialogues with a secretariat. It monitors current developments, implements cooperation activities and contributes to strategy building.

Indonesia

Indonesian-German exchange on data protection authorities and officers

The Secretariat for the Indonesian-German Digital Dialogue organised an exchange on data protection authorities (DPA) and data protection officers (DPO) in Germany and Indonesia. It was set up on behalf of the two partner ministries – the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Informatics (MCI). The exchange took place on 2 May and revolved around DPA and DPO frameworks. It followed up on a fruitful exchange on personal data protection held last year.

Brazil

Panel discussion about data spaces in the aviation sector

On 23 April, the Secretariat for the Brazilian-German Digital Dialogue and the EU-Brazil Digital Dialogue participated in the panel discussion “Aviation data spaces: The importance of promoting interoperability in the aviation sector”. It took place at the Digital Week of the Brazilian National Agency for Civil Aviation (ANAC). The panel highlighted the importance of data spaces for secure, trustworthy and interoperable data sharing.

As one of the largest emerging markets in the digital economy, Brazil is an important strategic partner for Germany. The Brazilian-German Digital Dialogue aims to strengthen these economic ties by acting as a platform for political cooperation and private sector engagement.

Ghana

Sub-Saharan Africa's fifth-largest economy is a pioneer in the digitalisation of the financial sector. The bilateral Digital Dialogue enables Ghanaian and German stakeholders to exchange views on this and other topics.

The Indo-German Digital Dialogue provides a multi-stakeholder platform to promote bilateral cooperation. It brings together policy makers, the private sector and research institutions to jointly drive the digital transformation of both economies.

In the Japanese-German ICT Policy Dialogue, two of the world's largest economies and tech powerhouses commit to jointly shape the international framework for digitalisation.

In the Korean-German Digital Dialogue, two major economies and technology leaders are jointly committed to shaping a better international framework for digitalisation.

Mexico

In recent years, Mexico has made significant progress in its digital transformation, reflected in the optimisation of processes in various sectors. Together, Mexico and Germany are working on strategies to implement digitalisation and Industrie 4.0.

Singapore

Connecting two of the most innovative economies in the world, the Singaporean-German Digital Dialogue is strengthening digital policy and linking businesses across sectors and borders.

South Africa

South Africa is Germany's most important trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa. The South African-German Digital Dialogue offers stakeholders from business, academia and civil society from both countries the opportunity to get involved in shaping digital policy.

Interested in a cooperation?

The Digital Dialogues are a multi-stakeholder initiative. Governments and public authorities from Germany and the respective partner country meet with business associations, companies, civil society organisations and research institutes. The stakeholders can contribute directly to the government dialogues by bringing forward cooperation topics or addressing challenges they may face.
