Open Industry Roadshow: Exploring the role of data spaces in the Brazilian data economy

Brazil

In November 2024, the Secretariat for the Digital Dialogues in Brazil co-organised the Open Industry Roadshow with the Brazilian IoT Association (ABINC) and the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Association (VDMA). The roadshow took place in four different Brazilian cities and underscored the transformative potential of data spaces to leverage the country's data economy.

The roadshow aligned with Brazil's efforts to establish a robust digital framework, inspired by European initiatives such as the EU Data Act and the Data Governance Act, and aimed at strengthening the national data economy policy. The discussions, which included presentations of Industry 4.0 success stories in the region, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors. Brazilian and European industry leaders emphasised ways to foster data-driven ecosystems, drawing on Europe's progress to improve Brazil's evolving digital strategy.

The initiative is part of a continuous effort that began with the IDSA Workshop on Data Spaces, held in Brasília on 7 October. This inaugural event, hosted by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) in collaboration with the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), focused on the strategic importance of Data Spaces. Supported by the Secretariat for the EU-Brazil Digital Dialogue and Partnership Facility, the workshop set the stage for deeper discussions during the roadshow by exploring how data interoperability and security can accelerate Brazil's digital transformation.

Driving innovation: Bridging local challenges with global solutions

Each stop of the Open Industry Roadshow brought together experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to discuss tailored strategies for leveraging Data Spaces within Brazil’s industrial landscape. These forums explored how cutting-edge technologies can enhance productivity, innovation, and competitiveness while addressing local challenges.

By the end of November, the roadshow had fostered meaningful discussions and strengthened ties between Brazil and its European counterparts. It demonstrated how international cooperation and strategic policymaking could position Brazil to lead in the data economy era, integrating global best practices with localised solutions.
