Germany and its partner countries aim to jointly shape better conditions for digital transformation worldwide. The governments are in regular dialogue with stakeholders from business, academia and civil society to ensure that political approaches meet current needs. The last months were filled with events, webinars, annual meetings, and our very first International Digital Dialogues Conference. International Digital Dialogues Conference"Digitalisation knows no borders"On 21 and 22 November, the partner countries of the Digital Dialogues came together at the International Digital Dialogues Conference in Berlin. More than 100 representatives from politics, business, civil society, and academia discussed digital policy issues in working groups and panels.
Highlights from the International Digital DialoguesBRAZILFourth Annual Meeting of the Brazilian-German Digital Dialogue and MCTI’s Technical MissionFrom 7 to 11 October 2024, high-level officials, business leaders, civil society representatives, and academics gathered in Berlin for the Fourth Annual Brazil-Germany Digital Dialogue. The meeting reaffirmed both nations' commitment to advancing collaborative digital policies and exploring new areas of cooperation. Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) also led a Technical Mission, fostering knowledge exchange through technical discussions and visits to innovation hubs, furthering mutual understanding of digital transformation strategies.
Webinar: Paving the Way to Sustainable AIAn exchange on “Scaling AI-based business models in Brazil” took place as a side event during the Web Summit Rio. The event was organised in partnership with the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rio de Janeiro and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. It gave European start-ups a better understanding of the Brazilian market.

Navigating EU data protection: nasscom workshop for Indian digital companiesOn 12 September 2024, the Indian software association nasscom (National Association of Software and Service Companies) organised a workshop on compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for a delegation of Indian companies from the digital sector. The workshop was part of a series of events on the legal aspects of entering the German market. Marc Lendermann, Head of Division for Bilateral Digital Policy and Digital Dialogues of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDV), opened the workshop in Düsseldorf. The exchange was a follow-up on the series of discussions on personal data protection. KENYAData Innovation Lab: international politics on AIOn 26 August 2024, the Data Innovation Lab, under the German Federal Foreign Office convened AI experts and international policy professionals for a Foreign Policy and AI workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop was jointly organised by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nairobi, the International Digital Dialogues and the GIZ Digital Transformation Center, Kenya. The workshop aimed at exploring the complex landscapes of AI in Kenya through meaningful discussions while offering networking opportunities to all participants. It was attended by representatives of various embassies, the Government of Kenya, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and academia.
MEXIKOExchange on indicators and indexes for digital developmentOn 2 September, the secretariat for the Mexican-German Digital Dialogue organised a virtual exchange between two think tanks from both countries, Initiative D21 and Centro México Digital, on the development of digital indicators and indexes. Shaping the future of internet and AI governanceThe Government of Germany’s (GoG) ‘Strategy for International Digital Policy’ is a clear commitment to a global, free, and open internet and the continuation of the multi-stakeholder approach to internet governance. Turning this commitment into action, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) launched a process for strategic foresight with the involvement of various German stakeholders and communities in September. In addition, the BMDV is also promoting the involvement of German stakeholders, particularly German youth, in international forums with the ‘International Digital Policy’ fellowship. Learn more here
Ghana and Germany partner up in a new Digital DialogueWe are pleased to announce that a new partner country is joining the Digital Dialogues. In a move to boost digital policy coordination between both nations, Ghana and Germany have signed a joint declaration of intent. It lays the foundation for future political and technical cooperation in the Digital Dialogue.
